Ellie Marsh
Ellie in brief
Ellie Marsh is a home sewist who learned to sew as an adult and writes the beginner guides she wishes she had in her first year. She is not a professional seamstress, teacher or designer. At Sew Simple Joy, she covers one skill at a time in plain words, with honest fixes for the mistakes most beginners make.
Why I write for beginners
I started sewing as an adult, and the hardest part was not the machine. It was the jargon, the guides that assumed I already knew things, and the worry that every wobbly seam meant I was doing it wrong.
So I write for the first year of sewing. Each post teaches one skill, like threading a machine or sewing a straight 5/8 in (1.5 cm) seam, and gives you the answer in the first two lines. When a term like seam allowance or feed dogs comes up, I explain it the first time it appears. Every how-to ends with a "What can go wrong" section, because most beginner problems have simple, specific fixes.
I am not a professional, so I lean on sources that are. Machine settings and specs come from the manufacturer's manual or product page, linked so you can check them yourself. Pattern advice follows the pattern company's own instructions. Before anything is published, a human editor reads it for accuracy and clarity. If I am not sure of something, I say so instead of guessing.
A note on the name
Ellie Marsh is a pen name. The guides are written by the home sewist described on this page, who uses a pen name to keep her personal life separate from the site.
What I write about
Getting started: choosing a first machine, threading, and your first stitches.
Core techniques: straight seams, backstitching, seam finishes and hems.
Fabric and patterns: picking beginner-friendly fabric and reading a pattern.
Easy projects: small, finishable makes like tote bags, drawstring bags and pillow covers.
